Black truffle paradise

There is a village in the Lot, a french department in the southwest of France, where “la truffe” is part of people’s life. This village is called Lalbenque and for me it’s a once in a lifetime visit.

The best season to go is winter which means black truffle season! Here’s a recommendation for trying this local and delicious black diamond:

Au Goût Dujour is a restaurant proud of their local and seasonal menu. A very cozy place and not at all expensive taking into account the quality of the food. Fully recommended!

From December to Mars you will have dedicated truffle’s menus where the local quercy’s truffle is the star. We had the chance to taste one and it was an experience to remember.

Take a look at the truffle´s menu we had the chance to taste:

Starter

A delightful “pâté en croûte” with truffle and “foie gras” where the earthy and aromatic truffle sided perfectly with the rich and savory “pâté”.

Main course

These delicious scrambled eggs with parmesan chips and truffle were our favorite dish! The smooth taste of the eggs allowed you to really feel the truffle’s delicate and special flavour.

Cheese

2 different cheeses made the tasting experience:

  • Saint Nectaire: A creamy and soft cheese made out of cow’s milk

  • Tomme de brebis: A savory cheese with a lot of character thanks to the raw sheep’s milk

Yes, in France, desserts are often given in 2 steps and the cheese is the starter!

Fun fact

Did you know that truffles can be easily found thanks to trained pigs, hunting dogs and… flies! There is a specific species of fly that loves truffles. Years ago, harvesters had a trained eye and were able to track them down to dig out the black treasure.

Dessert

Rich homemade chocolate ice cream sided by an appetising custard and topped by our favorite ingredient: the truffle.

Who said truffle and chocolate cannot be an amazing match? This dish had an intense chocolate taste at the beginning and the characteristic truffle fragance at the end… it was just delicious!
